Raymarine Autohelm Autopilots
The addition of an autopilot system to your boat wil greatly enhance your ability to enjoy your time aboard when underway. A correctly fitted and calibrated autopilot system will allow you the time and freedom to attend to other areas of your boat or take a well earned rest from the helm safe in the knowledge that you will continue to make passage safely and steadily.
Autopilot sysytems work in a variety of ways depending on the size, steering method and propulsion system on your vessel. In simplicity, there are 2 different types of autopilot system, the "Above deck" autopilots and "inboard" autopilots.
Above deck autopilots control the boat by manually adjusting the tiller or wheel which you normally use to steer the boat, making them simple to install and operate. They are available for tiller steered vessels and wheel steered boats of both power and sail type. They are limited in their ability as they rely on the boats steering systems accuracy and can only handle boats of a certain size/displacement.
Inboard (or "Below Deck" autopilots are some what more difficult to install and necessarily more expensive, thought they offer much greater range of functions, compatibility with other instruments and are more suitable for larger vessels. There are 3 parts to an inboard autopilot system: - A drive unit for physically steering the vessel - a course computer that handles the input data (rate gyro, GPS etc.) and controls the drive unit - a control head which interfaces between the computer and the helmsman and allows control of the system and its functions. Each of these components can be selected to suit your type of boat and the conditions in which it is used.
