Despite being surrounded by water, your boat is the last place you want to experience a fire. Many boat materials are flammable and with petrol, diesel and gas on board, it is essential that any small fire is dealt with quickly and efficiently. Engine rooms / bays are an obvious area of concern and most boats are fitted with an automatic system to immediately deal with such emergencies. If your boat has a galley, a fire blanket is also essential in this area as this is the second most common area in which fires can start. Depending on the size of boat, you should also have at least one manual extinguisher aboard, more in larger vessels. Choose the extinguisher that is right for the job and ensure that it is in date, in serviceable condition and most importantly you know where it is kept and how to use it in an emergency.
