Need a Specific Brand?

The Loctite brand, part of the Henkel portfolio since 1997, is renowned for the excellence of its

The brand has many uses in the marine environment and it offers adhesives and sealants specially designed for certain purposes.

For example, Loctite 243 is designed specifically to secure and seal bolts, nuts and studs to prevent loosening due to vibration. In comparison Loctite SI 5990 is a sealant designed for gasketing.

Below we have assembled some guides on how to use the Loctite products sold no our site.

Using Loctite Threadlockers

Traditionally mechanical devices were used to ensure that screws, nuts and bolts etc would not come loose. Although they were made for this purpose, they have several shortcomings.

Loosen under vibration, thermal expansion and/or improper torque
Do not seal threads
Require extensive inventory of several shapes and sizes
Prone to rust

There is now a better way, Invented 50 years ago by Loctite Corporation, now Henkel Corporation,
This revolutionary method to lock and seal threaded fasteners with liquid anaerobic adhesives has found worldwide acceptance. Suited for a wide range of applications, from delicate electronic components to heavy industrial equipment, Loctite threadlockers have dramatically increased the reliability of threaded assemblies.

The benefits of Loctite threadlockers include:

Lock nuts and bolts against vibration and thermal expansion
Seal against corrosion and leakage
Reduce inventory costs
Suitable for all shapes and sizes of fasteners
Act as a thread
Maintain critical adjustments of the assembly
No on-torque adjustments needed
High chemical resistance

The Loctite thread lockers we sell on our site include Loctite 243, 270 , 2700 and 2400.

Selecting Your Threadlocker

Threadlocker Key Selection Factors

Low Strength (Purple): Ideal for fasteners <1/4" (6 mm). Easy disassembly using hand tools
Medium Strength (Blue): Designed to be removable with standard hand tools on 1/4" to 3/4" fasteners
High Strength (Red): Designed to deliver high strength on 1/4" to 3/4" (6 mm to 22 mm) fasteners. For removal, it may require localized heat (>550°F/260°C), hand tools, and disassembly while hot

Liquid Formulas: Everyday assembly; ideal for fine threads and blind holes
Semisolid Formulas: Pocket-friendly, ideal for overhead applications
Tape Formula: Pocket-friendly; controlled application; can be pre-applied several days before assembly

Application Methods

Pre-Applied: QuickTape threadlocker can be applied beforehand on bolts that are waiting to be assembled
Pre-Assembly: Most Loctite® liquid threadlockers are designed to be applied at the moment that parts will be assembled
Post-Assembly: Wicking grade formula can be applied on parts that are already assembled

Using Loctite Thread Sealants

Loctite sealants are much superior to traditional sealant types as illustrated below

Solvent-based sealing compounds shrink during cure as solvents evaporate. Fittings must be re-torqued to minimise voids. They lock the assembly by a combination of friction and deformation.

PTFE tape: lubricates, allowing fittings to loosen under dynamic loads and resulting in loss of clamping force and leakage. Dynamic loads may accelerate creep, causing leakage over time.

The lubricating effect of PTFE frequently results in over-tightening of fasteners, adding stress or causing breakage of parts. Application requires good professional skills to avoid stressing fittings or castings.

Hemp & Paste: Slow to apply and require a lot of expertise, messy to use, and interfere with the
torque needed to obtain the correct pre-stress. Frequently require re-work to achieve a 100% seal
of the assembly.

Advantages of Loctite thread sealants compared to traditional uses

Single component - clean and easy to apply

Do not creep, shrink or block systems

Can be used on any size of pipe fitting

Replace all types of tape and hemp/paste sealants

The seal resists vibration and shock loads

Grades with several approvals, e.g. LOCTITE 55 Sealing Cord: Potable water (KTW) and Gas (DVGW) approvals

Protect mated threaded areas against corrosion

Using Loctite Gasketing Products

Loctite gasketing products are a reliable alternative to conventional compression gaskets to prevent leakage of fluids or gases between flange surfaces.

In addition, Loctite anaerobic Gasketing products act as both an adhesive and sealant between two flanges. The liquid sealant completely fills the space between the flange surfaces, thereby preventing the escape of fluid materials or gases in composite machine parts or pipe connections.

At the same time, adhesion to the flange surfaces enhances the strength of the assembly.
Loctite flange sealing products are applied as liquids, allowing them to fill and seal imperfections on metal flange surfaces.

These sealants cure in the presence of metal and the absence of air to form a durable seal between components, with maximum face-to-face contact.

Loctite flange sealants also eliminate corrosion and provide instant low-pressure seal on assembly.

After full curing Loctite flange sealants will not shrink, crack or relax and they resist displacement better than conventional gaskets.
