We aim to provide you with information on different types of marine rope construction and material, what qualities to look for in rope and how to choose the right rope for the job.

Yacht Chandlers are delighted to supply high quality marine rope. Marine Rope for Fender & Buoys | Specialist

The properties required from a good anchoring rope include:

Durability
Low buoyancy (it should not float)Limited amount of stretch
Ease of handling

Dependant on the size of the anchor you use, there may be other factors which should be taken into consideration. An example would be if the anchor is to be dropped, or lifted by hand, and the rope flaked into a container or locker for storage, its ability to not kink or twist will be valuable, as will it's softness on the hands.
The diameter and length of the rope is also important. It is vital that you have sufficient length to anchor safely whilst bearing in mind the limitations of storage available. Check the breaking strain of the rope before purchasing.

The properties of a good Safety Rope will include:

High buoyancy
High visibility
Relatively easy to throw
Reasonable strength

Safety lines, are made from polypropylene due to its suitable properties as a material, on average the diameter of a safety rope would be around 10mm however this will obviously vary with the size and destinations of your vessel. The most important thing to look for when choosing a safety line would be buoyancy and visibility, for obvious reasons it is essential that the line is easy to see, and floats.
Halyard & Sheet Rope

The properties of a good Halyard & Sheet Rope will include:

Good strength
Very low stretch.
Flexible and easy to handle.
Good performance in running gear.
Easy to splice.

The most important thing to look for when buying halyard & sheet ropes, will be high strength under strain, and extremely low stretch. This is obviously important in keeping the shape of the sail, using a rope with a high stretch value when under strain will cause the sail to fluctuate in shape, which is disastrous for maintaining that perfect sail.
Mooring Rope

The properties of a good Mooring Rope will include:

Good strength retain ability.
Retainable flexibility.
Easy to splice.
Good sheave action.

In almost all cases the best type of mooring rope to use would be 3-strand polyester. This is the general favourite because of its ability to stay soft and white when meeting water. Nylon is the other popular material; however, it's used far less because of its tendency to stiffen, and discolour when it absorbs water.
Take care when purchasing a mooring rope to consider the stress your vessel will put on the rope. The best choice is to play safe and use a rope with a breaking load that far extends the likely weight caused by your vessel.

Rope Maintenance

Caring for rope prolongs its useful life, it also helps prevent the fibres breaking down and parting. The Yacht Chandlers team has put together their top tips for looking after marine rope.

When possible keep ropes out of direct sunlight when not in use as ultra violet light (UV) , can degrade fibres. Nylon is particularly susceptible to UV damage.

Wash your rope with warm fresh water to get rid of salt and dirt deposits. Do not use chemicals as this can affect the lubricant used in the base yarn.

Whip rope ends and splice or heat shrink them to prevent fraying. Coil rope when it's not in use, this prevents kinks from forming. As you coil and tidy your rope check for wear and tear, be sure to alter the contact points regularly this will prevent chafing at one point.
Avoid contact with cleaning chemicals this may burn the rope.

Splicing rope correctly retains 90-95% of un-spliced rope strength, it is important to regularly inspect splices.

Good quality rope will last for years, if you look after it then it will look after you. Try to learn some basic rope handling skills and marine knot tying.
